Menashe

Director Joshua Z. Weinstein enters the world of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in New York City, and finds a star in first time actor Menashe Lustig, who plays a loosely fictionalised version of himself in a story of a widower who causes concern in the community with his defiant ways. Menashe lives in the Jewish neighbourhood of Borough Park in Brooklyn and works in a grocery store. Recently widowed, his son has been taken to live with Menashe’s successful brother-in-law, as tradition within the community dictates that a child must be raised in a household headed by a husband and wife. But Menashe rebels against the insistence of his family and rabbis that he must remarry as soon as possible, and instead attempts to prove that he is a mensch capable of providing a suitable home for his son by himself.
