Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie

British broadcaster Louis Theroux has made a name for himself tackling society’s most taboo and controversial subjects, so it’s no surprise that in his first feature film he has now turned his curious eye on the infamous Church of Scientology. Denied cooperation and access by the church, Theroux instead employs the help of their former second-in-command, Mark “Marty” Rathbun and a cast of actors in order to recreate key events in Scientology history. Focusing particularly on the church’s leader David Miscavige and influential Scientologists such as actor Tom Cruise, Theroux attempts to discover what is at the heart of organisation, and how people are drawn to such a controversial doctrine, via dramatic recreations. Personable yet always keenly sceptical, Theroux keeps his head even when it becomes apparent he is being tailed by Scientology representatives claiming to be making their own documentary about him.
