Innocents, The

It's December 1945, and the Second World War is finally over. Mathilde (Lou de Laâge), a young French Red Cross doctor, finds herself in liberated Warsaw treating the last of the French soldiers returning from the front. One night, a young Benedictine nun appears at the clinic, begging Mathilde to follow her back to her convent on urgent business. What Mathilde finds there is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth. As Mathilde enters the sisters' fiercely private world, secrets rise to the surface, and modernism clashes with faith and tradition. Based on a true story, the latest film from Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) compassionately explores what happens when war ravages a house of God, and how an unthinkable act of violation highlights the undeserved shame, fear and silence that defines many women’s experiences of faith within the traditional church.
