Frantz

The latest film from French director François Ozon (Swimming Pool, 8 Femmes), FRANTZ is a hypnotic tale of love, omission and remembrance set in the aftermath of the First World War. A loose adaptation of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 drama Broken Lullaby, FRANTZ is concerned with young German woman Anna (Paula Beer), who is mourning her fiancé Frantz, who was killed on the battlefield. Anna spends her time warding off unwanted advances from other would-be suitors and visiting Frantz’s grave, and it is here that she encounters Adrien (Pierre Niney), a Frenchman who says he is an old friend of Frantz. While initially dubious of his story, Anna comes to see Adrien as the only other living connection to her beloved. But Adrien is not telling the whole truth about his relationship with Frantz. French, German language, English subtitles.
