Based on the acclaimed book ‘History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier’, DENIAL recounts Deborah E. Lipstadt’s legal battle against David Irving, who charged her with libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. Professor Lipstadt, portrayed here by Rachel Weisz, attracted the ire of World War II historian David Irving (Timothy Spall) when she included him in her book about Holocaust deniers. Irving accused her of libel, and sparks a legal battle that pulled Lipstadt into a fraught limelight. Under British law, in a libel case the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. Directed by Mick Jackson (Temple Grandin) and adapted by David Hare (The Reader), DENIAL is a film never more vital in an age of supposed ‘post-truth’.
