After the Storm

NOVA EXCLUSIVE! The latest film from Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda (Nobody Knows, Like Father Like Son) is a gentle family drama of a father on the skids attempting to do the best for his son. Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is a once successful novelist who now works as a private detective in order to pay child support to his ex-wife and son, but more often than not his funds go towards his gambling addiction. Angling to re-enter the lives of his family, Ryota visits the apartment of his mother while his ex-wife and son are visiting just as a typhoon is about to hit, and as the storm rages the little family have plenty of time to work out their grievances. Another quiet yet powerful tale of aching humanism, with AFTER THE STORM Kore-eda cements his status as Japan’s leading director and heir to the cinema of Ozu, ably supported by beautiful subtle performances from Abe and Kiki Kirin (the star of Naomi Kawase’s An) as Ryota’s wryly hilarious mother Yoshiko. “Hirokazu Kore-eda may only make good movies, but After the Storm is one of his best.” - IndieWire Japanese language, English subtitles.
